Adapted from the Campus Model Chemical Hygiene Plan (8/95 version) for Everitt
Laboratory by Mike Fitzsimmons and Kevin Beernink. Currently under revision: August 20, 2010
(Dane Sievers)
Only information specific to Everitt Laboratory is included here, and is in addition
to the Campus Chemical Hygiene Plan. Persons working with chemicals in Everitt Lab
should read this before and after the Campus Plan. The UIUC Division of Research
Safety can be reached at 333-2436.
MODIFICATIONS TO THE PLAN FOR EVERITT LABORATORY
This appendix contains all the site specific information for Everitt Laboratory.
It is included as a separate appendix because the Department Research Safety makes
the modifications to the preceding Model Plan. Therefore, updates are accomplished
by merging the latest version of this document with the latest campus Model Chemical
Hygiene Plan.
The information below supplements the information in the campus Model Chemical Hygiene
Plan.
TRAINING
MSE 492 (time table)
A reasonable effort must be made by all persons working with chemicals in Everitt
Laboratory to attend the first 3 sessions of this valuable course. Laboratory workers
shall be expected to adhere to the safety practices presented during those 6 hours.
Compensation for the attendance time is at the discretion of the lab supervisor.
MSE 492 shall supplement the training required in the Model Plan and should be
noted on the EMPLOYEE LABORATORY SAFETY TRAINING RECORD form required by the Plan.
(A copy of the form will normally be included later in this appendix.)
Teaching Assistants
All teaching assistants must attend the ECE Departmental TA Orientation which includes
chemical safety training.
CHEMICAL DISPOSAL
Chemical Pickup site (room 50G)
Chemicals which are not acutely toxic may be placed in the designated area within
50G. They must be clearly labeled as to their contents as well as with the word
"WASTE". Only acids should be placed in the cabinet.
When chemicals are placed in the designated area, the appropriate form (CWM-TRK-01,
-02, -03, -04) should be sent by campus mail to DRS. They will send stickers to
be placed on each container of waste, and notification as to when the waste will
be picked up. The necessary forms are included in each UIUC Chemical Waste Management
Guide, a copy of which can be obtained from DRS.
Chemicals should never be brought to Everitt Laboratory for the purpose of disposal.
DRS can pick up chemicals anywhere.
Unknown chemicals must be given a small set of reactivity tests before they can
be disposed. A copy of the procedure will be sent upon request to DRS (3-2436).
Screening of unknowns is the duty of the lab supervisor responsible for the chemical.
No unknowns which do not have the results of the reactivity testing as required
by DRS are to be left in 50G.
GAS CYLINDERS
Compressed gas cylinders should only be brought into Everitt Laboratory when there
is no alternative. In most cases it should be possible to pipe gases from tanks
in the gas cage or vault.
Everitt Laboratory is an instructional facility which at times has a very large
number of students inside.
Furthermore, the gas cage behind Everitt Laboratory is not intended for long term
storage of gas cylinders. Cylinders that are stored longer than 1 month will be
returned to the supplier.
SUPPLEMENTS TO THE STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR INDIVIDUAL LABS
The various labs which use chemicals are encouraged to place copies of their particular
chemical safety procedures here. Contact Dane Sievers in order to do so.
ECE 444 lab (50Q,R,S,J)
In case of Emergency contact:
FIRST: Dane Sievers 333-8249 Rm 46 E.L. 897-6196 home
Dan Mast 333-3496 Rm 248 E.L. 355-1720 home
John Hughes 333-4674 Rm 324 M.L. 643-7416 home
All employees should be familiar with the location and use of the safety related
devices in the lab.
Only a single bottle of any liquid chemicals should be stored in the lab. All others
should be stored in the ventilated, explosion-proof cabinets in the entranceway
(50M). Chemicals in the lab should be stored under the fume hoods and away from
the sprayer hoses which could tip them over.
Glasses and cleanroom garments must be worn in the lab at all times. Gloves and
a face shield are also required in 50R and 50S (the wetlab). A pair of thick acid
resistant gloves must be worn when working with acids at the acid hoods in 50R.
Lab aprons (located inside the chase access points) are strongly recommended whenever
acids are being poured.
Eye washes should be
tested at least once per week. Showers should be tested annually.
All employees should know how to react to hydrogen alarms: Shut off valves in the
lab if they are suspected of being the problem and always shut off the tank valve(s)
in the gas cage.
All employees should know how and when to use the items on the "SAFETY" shelf of
the storage shelves in 50Q.

NETWORK SAFETY RESOURCES
Lab supervisors should be aware of the following electronic sources of safety information:

OPTIONALLY INCLUDED MATERIALS
The following items may not always be included with all printed copies of the Plan
because they are not yet available in electronic form and/or they are too bulky.
SCREENING PROCEDURE FOR UNKNOWNS
This procedure is required by DRS (3-2436) before they will pick up any unknown
chemicals. The best policy is to make sure all containers are properly labeled.
DOOR SIGN FOR ROOMS WITH CHEMICALS
A completed copy of the form with "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY CALL 9-911" on its' top
is to be posted on every normal entrance to all labs. Information shall be
updated annually.
